Our Symbol |
| With the cross, water, and water
lily - identifies the women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America as
children of God, baptized, forgiven, adopted into God's family. It is a reminder
of the growth, beauty, and vitality that rises out of that life-giving baptismal
water. It is also a reminder of the mission of the church to "go therefore
and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and
of the Son and the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19).
|
| Our Mission Areas |
|
Community, growth, and action
- our three mission areas - are at the heart of the ministry of Women of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
Our three mission areas unite us in one
mission, namely, to proclaim
saving grace through Jesus Christ in all of life and throughout the world.
|
| COMMUNITY |
|
Through community, each women learns to value herself and others as created in
God's image and redeemed in Christ.
|
| GROWTH |
|
Through growth, each women is strengthened, developed, and equipped in a variety
of learning experiences.
|
| ACTION |
|
Through action, each women articulates and acts upon her faith as a disciple.
|
|
Our mission areas offer
avenues for addressing our mission-related policies. Fro example, how do we
approach peace from a community perspective? A growth perspective? An action
perspective? These three perspectives provide balance and increase the
organization's effectiveness. |
| How We Are
Organized |
|
Women of the ELCA is a community of
women committed to growing spiritually, to praying, to studying the Bible, and
to maturing in faith. Like the ELCA, this community of women has three
expressions: the unit, the synodical women's organization, and the churchwide
organization.
Our local expression is call a unit.
Most of our units are congregational
or intercongregational
units. We also have special
units, units formed in places
or situations that do not provide a practical means for congregational
affiliation (for example, a college campus). Women of the ELCA units are
composed of individual participants.
The women gathered in our units are the front line of our organization. Each
participant provides energy and vision. Within the unit regular meetings take
place, as women decide how to carry out missions of community, growth, and
action.
Some units are composed of several small
groups, often called circles.
There is no limit to the number of small groups a unit can have. Within the unit
or small groups, Bible studies, special programming, social ministry projects,
and other learning and fellowship opportunities occur.
Conferences
or clusters
are groupings of congregations within synodical organization.
Conferences/clusters gather for leadership development, training, and ministry.
Conference/cluster planning committees and coordinators are important links
between units and the synodical women's organization.
Women of the ELCA's synodical expression is 64
synodical women's organizations
across the United States and the Caribbean. Each synodical women's organization
has a board whose members are elected at the synodical women's organization
convention by delegates from units. Some synodical women's organizations have
conventions every two years; others have annual conventions. Each unit sends a delegate
to its synodical women's organization convention.
Within the churchwide expression of Women of the ELCA, the Triennial
Convention constitutes our
highest legislative body. Delegates to this convention, held every three years,
are elected at synodical women's organization conventions.
The Executive Board
is elected to serve Women of the ELCA between conventions by carrying out the
decisions of the Triennial Convention and by conducting the business of the
churchwide organization. The Executive Board sets this organization's
mission-related policies and triennium
theme.
Women of the ELCA's programming The churchwide
staff, led by an executive
director, develops and implements programs for the organization. The churchwide
staff is based in Chicago, Illinois, in the ELCA churchwide offices.
For each triennium (the three-year period between triennial conventions), the
Executive Board selects the mission-related policies that lift up the triennium
theme. |
| How We Serve |
|
Women serve and witness and grow
within each expression of Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
The mission areas generate opportunities for living out our mission-related
policies within units, synodical women's organizations, and the churchwide
organization.
Small groups within Women of the ELCA units pursue growth, community, and action
in many ways. Many of Women of the ELCA's leaders are also leaders within the
ELCA, offering their organizing and ministry skills to congregations, clusters
and conferences, synods, regions, boards of other churchwide units, and
churchwide initiatives.
Women of the ELCA participants express their thanksgiving for God's blessings
through financial offerings gathered by units and at events of clusters and
conferences, by synodical women's organizations, and at churchwide events. These
offerings support the work of our organization and its ministries to and with
people throughout the world. The women's organization also makes a major annual
gift to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. A portion of the gift is
designated for specific areas like domestic relief or global mission.
